And we are told to <i>show<\/i>. Not <i>tell.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Elements of Style advises us to <i>be specific, reveal definite and concrete\u00a0details.<\/i> Do it in an active voice (to maintain momentum), and SHOW. Don\u2019t tell me the ballerina is drunk, rather take me on a tour of all my senses and tickle each one. Let me see her falter and fall as she attempts a <em>pas de bourr\u00e9e en tournant<\/em>, let me smell the gin on her, hear the tremor in her voice, etc\u2026 Show me details that matter and make the writing come alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Well\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There is this book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, called One Hundred Years of Solitude. It has no dramatized scenes, not really, and no plot, not in the traditional sense. More importantly there is no <em>showing<\/em>, only <em>telling<\/em>, seven generations worth of it, and when the village disappears into thin air in the last scene, you don\u2019t care that Gabriel Garcia Marquez ignored the advise of \u201cShow, Don\u2019t Tell!,\u201d because he just TOLD you one of the greatest stories ever written. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1568\" src=\"https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" data-kale-share-title=\"Show, Don\u2019t Tell!\u00a0\" data-kale-share-url=\"https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/?p=1566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/alessandrob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Exposition-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Marquez takes your hand and tells the story. His trick is that he does it with confidence and grace. He begins like this: <i>Many years later as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buend\u00eda was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is a confident voice, one that tells you, here, <em>come<\/em>, let me \u201ctell\u201d you a story. And you listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014WiP: Acrylic and Ink on Canvas.
